As central Edinburgh buildings go - this is a youngster! In 1892 John Ritchie Findlay -by then a wealthy businessman and pillar of Edinburgh Society commissioned Architect Sidney Mitchell to commission a town house befitting his eminent status in Edinburgh society. This was Sidney Mitchell's first commision - and he was given the added benefit of unlimited budget! Finest quality stone, marble and precious woods were used to create this impressive building. JRF's influence can be seen throughout the public rooms and his initials and those of his wife are evident on stained glass, plasterwork and carved woodwork.

What to see

EDINBURGH  has been proclaimed "the Athens of the North" - an Ancient Scottish town with a very colourful past and exciting present! We suggest you take a deep breath, don your loudest tourist garb and do the Classic Tour (bus) as an introduction to Edinburgh; you can then revisit the places that interest you.
SHOPPING:  A Mecca with lots of designer stores. Jenners (Harrods style) - a remedy for overstuffed wallets but oh so therapeutic!
DAYS OUT: St Andrews (home of Golf) 1 ¼ hrs by train. A beautiful historic town with lots to see and lots of woollens and golf gear to buy. Blair Castle & Pitlochry: holiday town at the foot of the Highlands. Blair Castle hosts Britain's only permitted private army. Inchcolm Abbey & sealife cruises (from South Queensferry).
MUST VISIT:  Edinburgh Castle: For spectacular views of Edinburgh, the "ritual" sounding of the "1 o'clock gun" and Scotland's crown jewels - the oldest in Europe! Botanic Gardens: an outstanding collection of tropicals, sub tropicals and European plants, which is a relaxing contrast to the bustle of the city centre. Museum of Scotland: Edinburgh's newest museum  - dedicated to Scotland of old Holyrood House: Her Majesty The Queens Official Residence in Scotland and was the home of the tragic Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th Century.
ALSO VISIT: St Giles Cathedral  - The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre
